The University of Notre Dame to Convene Global Forests and Livelihoods Experts in Lima

The University of Notre Dame-based Forests and Livelihoods Assessment, Research, and Engagement (FLARE) Network will gather in Lima, Peru, from October 23-27, 2025, for its 11th Annual Meeting. The gathering will showcase the latest research on forest landscapes and the communities rely on them for their well-being. The central theme of this year’s meeting is “Forests and Transformative Change.”

The 2025 FLARE Annual Meeting is co-hosted by the Keough School of Global Affairs and the University of Engineering and Technology in Lima, where the meeting will take place..

“Forests are under strain across the globe, with devastating impacts on the surrounding communities and some of the world’s poorest people,” says Daniel C. Miller, Coordinator of the FLARE Network and Coyle Mission Collegiate Associate Professor in the University of Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs. “As new and longstanding pressures intensify, we are compelled to convene leading researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to find innovative solutions and chart a new path toward a more just, sustainable future for both people and the planet.”

The Annual Meeting will also feature presentations and discussions on various issues relating to forests and trees: just climate transition, forest governance from local to global, and data and methods for understanding forests and human well-being. The convening will draw more than 150 presenters and some 250 delegates from 40 countries, including participation from three former Ministers of the Environment of Peru, Indigenous Peoples representatives from different parts of the Amazon, and public and private sector decisionmakers related to forests and livelihoods from around the world.

Meeting attendees will connect and engage through a plenary roundtable discussion of the conference theme, keynote addresses by Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, Global Leader of Climate & Energy at World Wildlife Foundation and two plenary panel discussions, a mixer for students and early career professionals, and other interactive sessions.

The conference will be held in person, and videos will be available on the FLARE website and YouTube channel following the event.
